The Gordon Carmichael Reserve, named after Colin's grandfather, was once farmland where Colin milked cows. The area now includes Ryman Health, Mayfield, and St Michaels. Colin's early experiences repairing buildings and making tree huts on this land sparked his passion for carpentry. After becoming trade-qualified in Tauranga and working in London, Colin returned to start Proform.

Colin is the fourth generation of the Carmichael family to live in Tauranga since the late 19th century when the Carmichaels emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand.
